How to Uninstall and Reinstall Autodesk Material Library
What is Autodesk Material Library?
Autodesk Material Library is a shared textures and materials database used across multiple Autodesk products: 3ds Max, Maya, Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks. Rather than each product storing its own materials, they reference a centralized Material Library installation. This approach saves disk space and ensures consistency across your project ecosystem.
When Material Library becomes corrupted or fails to initialize, all dependent products experience rendering issues and material access problems.
Symptoms of Material Library Corruption
- Missing materials in Material Browser or Material Editor
- "Rendering features disabled" error in 3ds Max or Maya
- Material Library folder appears empty despite installation
- Revit material thumbnails fail to load
- Navisworks material library unavailable for rendering
- Autodesk products launch but material-dependent features are grayed out
- Error logs reference missing library paths
Understanding Modern Version Paths
Autodesk has updated Material Library storage locations significantly since 2018. Modern installations (2023–2026) store Material Library in:
Windows:
C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Material Library\[version]\- OR
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Material Library\(shared installation)
macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Material Library/[version]/
Linux:
~/.config/Autodesk/Material Library/[version]/
Note on 2018 Paths: If you're upgrading from 2018–2022 installations, old Material Library locations (which referenced individual product folders) may coexist. Our troubleshooting covers both legacy and modern paths.
Solution 1: Uninstall Material Library (Safe Method)
Using Autodesk Uninstall Tool (Windows)
This is the safest approach, as it manages dependencies across products.
- Press Windows Key + R and search for "Autodesk Uninstall Utility"
- Click the Autodesk Uninstall Utility when found
- In the window, locate Autodesk Material Library
- Check the box next to it
- Click Uninstall
- When prompted "Remove ODIS as well?", click No (we only want to remove Material Library, not the entire service layer)
- Wait for uninstallation to complete (typically 2–5 minutes)
- Critical step: Restart your system twice before moving to Solution 2
Manual Uninstall (If Autodesk Tool Unavailable)
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps
- Search for "Autodesk Material Library"
- If found, click Uninstall and confirm
- Open File Explorer and navigate to:
C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\- Delete the Material Library folder entirely
- Also delete:
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Material Library\(if present)- Any subfolder named MaterialLibrary in product directories
- Restart your system twice
macOS Uninstall
- Open Finder > Applications > Autodesk
- If you see an Autodesk Uninstall Utility, run it and follow the Windows steps above
- Otherwise, manually delete:
~/Library/Application Support/Autodesk/Material Library/
- Open Terminal and run:
rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/Autodesk/*Material*
- Restart your system twice
Solution 2: Download and Reinstall Material Library
Once uninstalled, download a fresh copy.
Option A: Download from Autodesk Account (Recommended)
- Sign in to Autodesk Account with your login credentials
- Navigate to Products & Services > My Subscriptions
- Find your 3ds Max, Maya, Revit, or other Autodesk product license
- Under Downloads, locate Autodesk Material Library for [Product Name]
- Click Download
- The installer (typically
.msion Windows or.dmgon macOS) will download - Wait for full download completion before proceeding
Option B: Direct MSI Download (Windows Only)
If Autodesk Account doesn't show Material Library:
- Right-click the downloaded
.msifile - Select Properties and note the file size
- Verify the size matches Autodesk's specifications (typically 1.2–1.8 GB for complete library)
- If significantly smaller, the download was interrupted—delete and re-download
Solution 3: Fresh Installation
Windows (Using MSI Installer)
- Close all Autodesk products completely
- Uninstall any existing Material Library using Solution 1
- Right-click the MaterialLibrary_[version].msi file
- Select Run as administrator
- Click Next on the welcome screen
- Accept the license agreement
- Important: Select Install for all users (not just current user) for shared library access
- Click Next and verify the installation path:
- Recommended:
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Material Library\ - Avoid custom nested paths that exceed 260 characters
- Recommended:
- Click Install
- Wait for installation to complete (3–10 minutes depending on drive speed)
- Click Finish
- Restart your system twice before launching Autodesk products
macOS (Using DMG Installer)
- Close all Autodesk products completely
- Double-click the MaterialLibrary_[version].dmg file
- Open the installer package inside the DMG
- Provide your admin credentials when prompted
- Follow the installation wizard
- Select Install for all users if prompted
- Click Install
- Restart your system twice
Linux
- Extract the installer archive (typically
.tar.gz) - Open terminal and navigate to the extracted folder
- Run:
sudo ./install.sh - Provide your root password
- Follow the wizard prompts
- Restart your system twice
Solution 4: Repair Existing Installation
If reinstallation is not practical, attempt to repair the current installation.
Windows:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps
- Find Autodesk Material Library
- Click Modify
- Select Repair (or Quick Repair if available)
- Allow the repair to complete without interruption
- Restart your system
macOS:
- Open Autodesk folder in Applications
- Run the Autodesk Installation Manager
- Navigate to Repair or Modify options
- Select Repair for Material Library
- Restart your system
Solution 5: Selective Reinstall for Specific Products
If only one product (e.g., Revit) is missing materials, you can reinstall Material Library specifically for that product.
3ds Max / Maya:
- Open the product
- Navigate to Customize > Preferences > Libraries (3ds Max) or Windows > Preferences > Material Library (Maya)
- Click Reinstall Material Library
- Follow the prompts and restart
Revit:
- Open Revit
- Navigate to File > Options > System
- Click Material Library Settings
- Select Reinstall and restart
Navisworks:
- Open Navisworks
- Navigate to Home > Options > Material Library
- Click Repair or Reinstall
- Follow prompts and restart
Navisworks-Specific Notes
Navisworks Material Library behaves slightly differently due to its model-viewing architecture:
- Navisworks references Material Library for rendering published models (
.nwdfiles) - If materials fail to load in Navisworks but work in 3ds Max/Maya, the issue is likely Navisworks' Material Library cache
- Fix: In Navisworks, go Home > Options > Rendering > Clear Material Cache and restart
- Material Library path for Navisworks is typically:
C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Material Library\Navisworks\[version]\
When Standard Solutions Don't Work
If materials remain unavailable after reinstall:
- Check file permissions: Ensure your user account has Read/Write access to Material Library folders. Right-click the folder > Properties > Security > Edit and grant your user Full Control
- Verify disk space: Ensure at least 10GB free space on your installation drive
- Disable antivirus temporarily: Real-time scanning may prevent proper library initialization. Temporarily disable and retry
- Check for library-specific errors: Open Autodesk product logs (typically
C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\Autodesk\[Product]\logs\) and search for "Material" to isolate the issue - Contact Autodesk Support: Provide your Autodesk account username, product version, OS, and error logs if available

FAQ
Q: Do I need to reinstall Material Library for each Autodesk product separately? A: No. A single Material Library installation is shared across 3ds Max, Maya, Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD. Reinstalling once applies to all products that reference it. However, each product may need to be restarted and re-pointed to the library location after reinstall.
Q: Can I use Material Library from an external drive? A: Technically yes, but not recommended. Network or external drive access introduces latency when rendering or browsing materials, significantly slowing performance. Always install to a local drive.
Q: Will reinstalling Material Library delete my custom materials?
A: Autodesk Material Library contains only the default material set. Custom materials you've created are stored separately in your product-specific material folders (typically Documents\[Product]\materials\ on Windows). Reinstalling the Library will not affect your custom work.
Q: Why are my Navisworks materials not rendering even after reinstall?
A: Navisworks uses a separate rendering engine from 3ds Max/Maya. The model file (.nwd) must reference material by name. If Navisworks can't find a matching material in the Library by that name, it skips it during render. Verify in your 3ds Max/Maya scene that materials are using standard Autodesk Material Library names before publishing to .nwd.
Q: Is it safe to delete old Material Library folders from 2018 installations?
A: Yes. If you've upgraded to 2023+ versions, old 2018–2022 Material Library folders can be safely deleted. Backup the old folder first just in case, then delete: C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\[ProductName]\[2018-2022 version]\Materials\
