The following Entry Point errors, or similar, are received when launching 3ds Max:

Other messages may include:

"The procedure entry point
?setCategory@QmaxRollup@MaxSDK@@QEAAXH@Z could not be located in the 
dynamic link library C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2017\3dsmax.exe"
"The procedure entry point ?SetTextureStageMapChannel@SimpleMaterial@Graphics@MaxSDK@ @QEAAXII@Z  could not be located in the dynamic link library GraphicsDriver.dll"


Corruption due to conflict upon installation of 3ds Max, updates or the software encountering previous crashes (Windows and 3ds Max).


To resolve the error:

  1. Reset the User Preferences to their defaults. This process involves renaming (or deleting) the ENU folder for 3ds Max, which gets recreated upon opening the program again and can help with an file corruption and/or crashing in 3ds Max.
  2. Run a Repair. This can sometimes resolve this type of error, by having 3ds Max find and resolve the issue on its own.
  3. Uninstall or Install service packs or updates. If a Service Pack or Update may have not properly installed for 3ds Max, there is the option to uninstall the Update to see if this corrects the issue. Alternatively, if there are more recent updates, these can be downloaded and installed to see if this helps.
    • To uninstall a 3ds Max Update:
      • Go to the Windows Control Panel > Uninstall or change a program > and click “View installed updates”.
      • Right-click on the Autodesk 3ds Max version update you would like to remove and “Uninstall” (Note: this will not uninstall the actual software).
    • To download and install the most recent Update for 3ds Max:
      • Navigate to your Autodesk Account. (
      • Under 3ds Max, select the product version and choose “Updates & Add-ons.”
      • The most recent 3ds Max product version downloads will be listed there.
  4. Perform a Clean Uninstall of 3ds Max.
