Issue:
How to reduce the amount of noise within a rendered image using the Autodesk Raytracer (ART) render engine in 3ds Max.
Causes:
Having low or incorrect ART settings can cause poor image quality, resulting in noise or render artifacts.
Solution:
To reduce the amount of noise within a render using the Autodesk Raytracer (ART), and subsequently any rendered object surfaces within that render, try making the following adjustments in the 3ds Max Render Setup window (Render Setup (F10) > ART Renderer tab):
Set the appropriate Render Quality
When creating images with ART, it is important to set the Render Quality based on what the desired production quality should be. For quick turnaround renders, using the Min. (Minimum), Draft, or Medium settings can get a lower-quality image finished more quickly for reviewing overall scene lighting and composition.
To reduce noise and increase the render quality, one or more of the following Render Quality Settings should be applied:
- High
- X-High
- Max. (Maximum)
Determine a time limit for the rendered image
When deciding to render an image, the processing time can take longer than expected (depending on how high quality the settings are). In the ART Rendering Parameters, it is possible to set an allotted time frame for the image to render within, whether the overall quality is attained or not.
One way to make sure that High Render Quality settings don’t result in unacceptably long render times is to set the Render Time duration to a fixed duration and then check the final result. For instance, setting the Render Time per frame to 15 minutes will result in the ART renderer producing the best-quality image within that specific period.
If, when using High or Extremely High-quality Render settings, the final render quality is at or near acceptable levels after X period of minutes, then adjust the Time settings up or down based on the overall amount of time required to render an image or entire animation sequence.
Choose a Rendering Method
There are two specified Rendering Methods that ART can utilize: Fast Path Tracing and Advanced Path Tracing.
While Fast Path Tracing will reduce a good amount of noise and is great for production style rendering, the Advanced Path Tracing option can help provide very high fidelity renders with complex light interactions without as much noise.
Set the appropriate Noise Filtering strength
Noise filtering is one of the most important settings when reducing noise within an ART rendered image. The Filter Strength will determine how much noise should be allowed to render in a given image. For best results select one of the following:
- 75%
- 100% (Fully filtered)
Indicate any preferred changes to Anti-Aliasing
While the Filter Diameter option may not reduce noise as much, it will help with any harsh (aliased) edges within the render.
Choose to render with Noise Pattern enabled
This option may be left unchecked, however, it may be desirable for high-quality animation renders as it produces a more natural look, akin to film grain.
